Global Outcry Follows Assassination of Al Jazeera Reporter in Gaza

The targeted assassination of Mohamed Weshah, a veteran Al Jazeera Mubasher reporter in the Gaza Strip, has sparked widespread international reactions. United Nations officials and media organizations have called for an immediate investigation into the incident. Weshah was killed in an attack attributed to the Israeli military, an event that has once again highlighted concerns over the safety of journalists in conflict zones.
Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, expressed condolences to Weshah’s family and colleagues, emphasizing that impunity for crimes against journalists must end. He stated that such incidents should be thoroughly and focusedly investigated, as targeting media professionals contradicts international principles and laws, and journalists must not be subjected to threats or killings.
The President of the International Federation of Journalists, speaking to Al Jazeera, lamented Weshah’s death and hailed him as a symbol of commitment to truth-telling. Referring to the approaching anniversary of the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022, he said that the continuation of deadly attacks on journalists has enraged the media community. According to him, over 250 journalists have been targeted during this period, and the UN must urgently adopt a proposed convention for the protection and safety of journalists.
Al Jazeera issued an official statement describing the incident as a clear violation of international norms, declaring that the attack on Weshah was not accidental but part of a policy aimed at intimidating journalists. The network stressed that it will pursue the matter through international legal channels to hold those responsible accountable.
Meanwhile, Palestinian groups including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Palestinian Resistance Committees condemned the event in separate statements, calling it an attempt to prevent the portrayal of realities on the ground in Gaza.
Mohamed Weshah’s brother told the media that he had repeatedly faced direct danger but returned to conflict zones to document the facts. He added that, according to the family’s belief, targeting journalists is an effort to stop the dissemination of what is happening in Gaza.
The killing of this journalist occurs amid repeated calls by international bodies for the immunity and protection of journalists in war zones—an issue that remains one of the serious challenges in armed conflicts.
