India Imposes Mandatory Visa Requirement for Afghan Hindu and Sikh Migrants

India has recently introduced stricter conditions for Afghan Hindus and Sikhs who have entered the country without valid travel documents. According to a statement from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, all individuals who have arrived in India by December 31, 2024, are now required to obtain a visa appropriate to their residency status to continue staying in the country.
This decision may affect the residency processes of Afghan Hindu and Sikh migrants, making their living conditions and stability in India more difficult. Previously, these communities faced numerous challenges regarding their residency, causing concern within the migrant population.
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ statement, published in The Hindu newspaper, emphasizes the obligation to present valid travel documents. This move has further heightened sensitivities around the rights of migrant minorities in India.
Meanwhile, Afghan Hindus and Sikhs have fled Afghanistan for years due to security and political reasons, often seeking asylum in countries like India. The new restrictions could expose them to increased instability in their uncertain situation.
