Canadian Prime Minister Stresses Protecting National Interests in Trade Talks with the US

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized the importance of reaching a fair trade agreement with the United States, warning that Ottawa may postpone negotiations until the arrival of the next US president if such an understanding is not achieved.
Carney pointed to Canadian public fatigue over escalating political tensions with the US, stating that the Ottawa government will not support any agreement that harms the country’s interests.
He also announced that Canada plans to expand its economic cooperation with the European Union and other free trade markets and will not compromise its positions under pressure from the US.
These remarks come amid increased tensions following several rounds of unsuccessful talks and confrontations over tariffs between Canada and the US. Previously, Donald Trump suggested that Canada should become a US state, a stance that has sparked widespread reactions in Canada.
