Uzbekistan to raise freight charges for shipments to Afghanistan

Uzbekistan Railways has announced that it will impose additional charges on freight to Afghanistan from Nov. 7, 2026, to prevent a decline in its revenues.

Under the decision, the extra fees for rail transport will range from $67 to $109 per wagon, while road transport charges will range from $235 to $637, depending on the distance.

The additional charges will apply to most goods transported and loaded through Uzbekistan to Afghanistan via the city of Termez, but wheat, petroleum products and gas will be exempt.

At the same time, Uzbek media reported that in the first nine months of 2026, more than 323,000 Afghan citizens travelled to the country for business purposes.

According to the Uzbek National Statistics Committee, a total of 357,500 foreign nationals entered the country for trade during this period, up 10.8% from a year earlier. Afghanistan ranked first with 323,660 business travellers, followed by Turkmenistan with 24,196 and Tajikistan with 6,412.
