UN Security Council to Hold Special Session on Afghan Women

The United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting in New York on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to examine the situation of women in Afghanistan and other war-torn regions, sexual violence against women during conflict, and their declining participation in peace processes.

At the session, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Sima Bahous, executive director of UN Women, will speak, along with a representative from Afghan civil society.

According to the United Nations, the main topics of the meeting will include rising sexual violence during wars, threats against women activists, and cuts in funding for women’s rights organizations.

The meeting comes as women and girls in Afghanistan continue to face severe restrictions on education and employment, the result of Taliban administration policies in recent years.

The United Nations has repeatedly stressed the importance of fair participation by women in political decision-making and peace processes, but despite this, women’s share in these areas has sharply declined.
