UN backs projects for returning women in Kunduz amid Taliban restrictions

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan has reported that, with the organisation’s support, opportunities have been created for women returning from Iran to start and expand businesses. The effort is aimed at increasing income generation and creating jobs.

Women entrepreneurs in Kunduz province have been able to expand their economic activities after receiving financial aid, equipment and business and marketing training. One dairy business in the province produces between 400 and 500 kilograms of yoghurt a day and has created jobs for 12 people, including seven returning migrant women.

The support is being provided under a project funded by the government of Japan and implemented by the UNDP in cooperation with the Aga Khan Foundation.

However, Afghan women have faced severe restrictions on employment and economic activity over the past five years since the Taliban retook control, sharply reducing their job opportunities. These restrictions are seen as a major obstacle to women’s economic development and financial independence.
