Amnesty International Says Afghan Girls Are Leaving the Country to Continue Their Education
Amnesty International’s South Asia regional office says the Taliban administration’s continued ban on girls’ education has forced a number of Afghan girls to leave the country to continue their studies.
The organisation said on Thursday, Sept. 26, marking the fifth anniversary of the ban on girls’ education, that millions of girls have been deprived of their right to education during this period, and that the consequences of the restriction have been shattered dreams and the perpetuation of injustice.
Amnesty International said that despite these restrictions, many Afghan girls continue to resist in different ways, including protesting, studying in secret online schools and going abroad to continue their education.
The organisation has called on the international community to support Afghan girls and pressure the Taliban administration to reopen girls’ schools immediately.
After returning to power, the Taliban administration halted education for girls above sixth grade, a decision that has faced widespread reaction from human rights and education organisations and has become one of the most prominent cases of violations of the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
