US federal budget deficit reaches $2 trillion

Estimates from the Congressional Budget Office show that the US federal budget deficit reached $2 trillion in the first 11 months of fiscal year 2026.

According to the estimate, the newly recorded figure is only $6 billion less than the deficit in the same period of the previous fiscal year, indicating continued financial pressure on the US federal budget.

The Congressional Budget Office also said that large and persistent federal government deficits in recent years have been among the main factors behind the rapid increase in US national debt.

According to the agency, the US national debt has doubled over the past decade and quadrupled in less than two decades. The Congressional Budget Office is a nonpartisan body affiliated with the US Congress that prepares fiscal and economic estimates related to the federal budget.
