Pakistani Religious Leader Calls for Review of Treatment of Afghan Refugees

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, has expressed concern over the difficult conditions faced by Afghan refugees in Pakistan and urged international organizations to conduct a thorough review of their situation. He pointed to instances of harassment by police and administrative pressures from Pakistani government institutions affecting the daily lives of many Afghan families. Fazlur Rehman emphasized the necessity of sending representatives from international organizations to Pakistan to assess the conditions and document the treatment of refugees by government bodies. He also called on the global community to pay special attention to the security issues, human dignity, and rights of this group. Previously, Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticized the Pakistani government’s policies towards Afghan refugees, describing Islamabad’s approach as more vengeful and emotional. He labeled the recent Pakistani government decision for mass deportation of Afghan refugees as irrational and in need of global reconsideration. Although Fazlur Rehman did not specify the primary cause of Pakistan’s dissatisfaction, official Pakistani authorities have repeatedly accused the Kabul government of harboring members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). While the situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan remains one of the major humanitarian challenges in the region, the need for independent monitoring of how Pakistani institutions treat these individuals is increasingly urgent.
