Amina Mohammed Urges World Not to Forget Afghanistan’s Women and Girls

The UN deputy secretary-general has said women and girls in Afghanistan remain deprived of some of their fundamental rights, and the international community should not leave them alone.

In a message marking the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power, Amina Mohammed said Afghan women and girls are still bearing the heavy burden of being denied their rights, and their hopes and aspirations for the future have been put on hold.

She stressed that Afghan women should not be left to fend for themselves and that their efforts to build a future must be supported.

In recent years, the United Nations has repeatedly voiced concern over the sweeping restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan. These restrictions have become one of the main themes in the response of international bodies to the Taliban authorities’ actions.
