WHO Sends 150 Tonnes of Medicines and Medical Supplies to Egypt for Gaza
The World Health Organization has said that about 150 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies are being transferred from Dubai to Egypt to support health services in Gaza. The agency said the shipment is intended to meet the needs of around 500,000 patients.
According to the WHO, the aid includes emergency health kits, essential medicines, nutritional supplies, diagnostic equipment, shelter materials, medicines for chronic diseases and surgical supplies. The organization added that the shipment will be used to address part of Gaza’s urgent medical needs.
The WHO said the aid is being sent for the agency itself, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and a number of international humanitarian organizations, including PALMED, EMERGENCY and US Relief Without Borders.
It also wrote that charter flights to transport the shipment are being carried out with the support and operational cooperation of the Dubai Humanitarian Centre and the government of the United Arab Emirates. According to the WHO, this mechanism allows for faster transfer of larger volumes of needed medical supplies at a lower cost.
Gaza is located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, and health services in the territory rely heavily on international organizations and outside aid. The World Health Organization is one of the key United Nations agencies coordinating health assistance in emergencies.
