South Khorasan Governor Announces Plans to Expand Trade with Afghanistan
Seyed Mohammadreza Hashemi, the governor of South Khorasan province in Iran, has announced plans to develop economic and trade cooperation with Afghanistan, describing the country as a key opportunity for expanding trade in the region.
During a meeting with the Afghan Consul General in Mashhad, Hashemi stated that South Khorasan is ready to enhance border and commercial cooperation by utilizing existing facilities. He emphasized the pivotal role of the Mahirud border crossing in bilateral exchanges and called for reducing obstacles at this passage.
Hashemi also referred to the access road project to the Mahirud border, noting that this plan, which had been stalled for years, has now made significant progress. Additionally, he mentioned efforts to regulate the activities of workers and drivers at this border and the follow-up on issuing new cards for drivers.
According to the governor, strengthening communication infrastructure, establishing a clinic, and providing accommodation for drivers and travelers in the border area are also on the agenda. He added that creating a dedicated lane for exporting products such as cement at the Mahirud border could speed up cargo transfers and reduce the waiting time for trucks.
Hashemi highlighted the presence of some Afghan investors in border infrastructure, viewing this as an opportunity to expand joint investments. He also announced plans for an economic delegation from South Khorasan to visit Afghanistan, stating that before the trip, both parties’ needs and demands will be identified and executive agreements prepared.
The Mahirud border, located in South Khorasan province, is one of the official crossings between Iran and Afghanistan and handles a significant portion of Iran’s exports to Afghanistan.
