Afghan Activists Protest Taliban Restrictions on Women in Frankfurt
A number of Afghan activists gathered on Saturday, August 8, in Frankfurt, Germany, to protest against the Taliban administration’s restrictions on women and girls. They urged the international community to abandon its lenient approach toward the Taliban government. The protest took place on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
The protesters emphasized that over the past five years, Afghan women have been deprived of education, employment, and participation in social spheres, and that this situation should not become normalized in the world’s political dealings with the Taliban administration. They warned that ignoring the rights of millions of Afghan women and girls in political calculations equates to surrendering the fate of the country’s people to this administration.
Participants in the demonstration stated that the international community has been aware of the situation of Afghan women during this period but has remained silent in some cases regarding violations of their rights. They added that although the Taliban controls Afghanistan, it will not be able to silence the will and determination of Afghan women.
A statement released by the organizers noted that during years of migration and exile, only the location and method of resistance have changed, but Afghan women’s protests continue and will not cease until they achieve their fundamental rights.
One of the organizers said that the protest was held in collaboration with Amnesty International and the “Women, Life, Freedom” association in Frankfurt, aiming to once again draw the international community’s attention to the situation of Afghan women on the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s rule.
