Unexploded Ordnance Identified in Two Kabul Districts
The Disaster Preparedness Department has announced that following technical assessments in the Kalakan and Shakardara districts of Kabul province, areas contaminated with unexploded ordnance have been identified, confirming the need for their clearance.
According to the department, Qari Nooruddin Rustamkhil, Head of Clearance Coordination and Integration, along with a technical team, inspected suspicious sites. This action was taken after a meeting involving representatives from Kabul’s districts concerning disaster management, preventive projects, and surveys of contaminated areas.
In Kalakan district, a qanat (underground aqueduct), previously reported for an incident caused by unexploded ordnance, was reviewed and the necessity of its clearance was confirmed. Additionally, a site was identified in the village of Hofyan within the same district that contains ordnance remnants from past conflicts.
The Disaster Preparedness Department stated that the matter has been handed over to the emergency response team, and operations to neutralize and destroy these explosives will be conducted with technical staff present. Upon completion, a safety report of the area will be submitted to district authorities.
In Shakardara district, a site recorded as contaminated in the mine clearance program’s database was also evaluated. The department emphasized that the clearance process for this area will be pursued and implemented through the relevant authorities.
Kabul province remains one of the provinces where remnants of unexploded ordnance and explosives from previous wars still pose a threat to residents in some districts.
