Taliban Ministry Orders Evacuation of Kabul’s Omid-e Sabz Township, Threatening Thousands with Homelessness
The Taliban’s Ministry of Justice has issued a new order demanding the evacuation of the Omid-e Sabz township in Kabul, accompanied by warnings of the potential homelessness of tens of thousands of residents. The Afghanistan Liberation Front has stated that this measure could deprive thousands of families of their property rights and shelter.
On Saturday, August 8, the front released a statement announcing that the Taliban’s Ministry of Justice instructed the residents of this township to leave their homes. According to the front, over the past years, more than 20,000 families, mostly Hazara and Shia, have lived in Omid-e Sabz.
The Afghanistan Liberation Front described this decision as a continuation of a “policy of appropriation” and as discriminatory and arbitrary behavior. It emphasized that evaluating citizens’ property rights based on ethnicity or religion contradicts the principles of justice and equality. The front also expressed concern over reports about selective scrutiny of other townships and residential complexes belonging to Hazaras and Shias.
According to the statement, Omid-e Sabz was established during the republican era under President Hamid Karzai’s administration, and its residents legally acquired their properties by paying the required fees. The Afghanistan Liberation Front has called on the public and the international community not to remain indifferent to what it has described as a “dangerous and inhumane process.”
