Ukraine Urges Increased UK Defense Support Following Major Russian Offensive
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Britain’s new Defense Secretary, Wes Streeting, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and increase military support. The meeting took place amid a widespread Russian attack on Kyiv.
Zelensky warned that Moscow is likely to increase the production of ballistic missiles, and Ukraine requires additional air defense equipment to prevent future attacks. He stated that defense entails not only repelling attacks but also identifying and targeting the centers and capabilities from which these attacks are organized.
The Ukrainian president also disclosed that allied support for air defense missiles has declined, leading to a shortage of interceptor missiles for the Patriot system. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, some ballistic and cruise missiles were not intercepted during the recent Russian attack due to limited defensive capacity.
In response, the UK Defense Secretary reaffirmed London’s continued support for Kyiv and said his country is working to garner further support for Ukraine by coordinating with the defense contact group and Germany’s defense minister.
