Climate Change Worsens Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan, Says IOM
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced that the impacts of climate change have intensified the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, significantly increasing the need for humanitarian aid.
According to the organization, repeated events such as floods, consecutive droughts, and other natural disasters linked to climate change have further deteriorated the livelihoods of residents in many provinces and placed additional pressure on aid agencies.
IOM has warned that as the number of people affected by climate crises grows, the financial resources and operational capacity of humanitarian organizations to meet these rising needs face serious limitations, posing challenges to aid delivery.
The organization added that relief operations continue with the cooperation of international partners, focusing primarily on areas most affected by natural disasters. However, IOM has called on the global community to increase financial support and invest in disaster risk reduction programs and strengthening local capacities to mitigate the consequences of the climate crisis in Afghanistan.
In recent years, Afghanistan has been one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Rising temperatures, dwindling water resources, prolonged droughts, and devastating floods have impacted the lives of millions across the country. Alongside reduced humanitarian budgets, these factors have made addressing the needs of vulnerable populations even more difficult.
