US Senior Commander Flags Naval Resource Shortage for Defending Israel
Reports indicate that a shortage of destroyers equipped with missile defense systems is challenging the United States’ ability to simultaneously support Israel and protect its own territory, putting increasing pressure on Washington’s military resources amid tensions with Iran.
The Washington Post reported on Saturday, citing US officials, that General Alexus Grinkevich, head of the US European Command, warned senior Pentagon officials that without deploying more destroyers, he might have to prioritize either defending Israel or protecting US soil.
According to the report, destroyers equipped with ballistic missile interception systems are key US tools for countering potential Iranian attacks, and their reduced numbers could limit the country’s operational capacity in the region.
Pentagon officials described this warning as part of the regular operational risk assessment process. However, neither the US Department of Defense nor the US European Command has publicly commented on the details of this issue so far, according to the Washington Post.
