Germany Expands Deportation of Afghan Refugees Beyond Criminals and Security Threats
Germany’s government has paved the way for an increase in the deportation of Afghan refugees, announcing that from now on, the scope of this process will extend beyond criminals and security threats. According to this decision, adult single men who have received a final deportation order will be subject to deportation, even if they have no criminal record.
The Ministry of the Interior of the state of Hesse has stated that women are not included in this decision. Roman Posk, Hesse’s Interior Minister, said that only men who, after lengthy legal proceedings and the issuance of a final ruling, are obligated to leave Germany will be deported.
German officials have said that these individuals will be introduced to Taliban representatives prior to deportation to verify their identities and, if necessary, have travel documents issued for them. Berlin’s cooperation with the Taliban administration in this matter has faced criticism, but German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has rejected these criticisms.
Alexander Dobrindt, Germany’s Interior Minister, also emphasized, following a deadly attack on a student in the city of Trier, that deportations to countries such as Afghanistan should be increased.
On the other hand, the Hessian Refugee Council has warned against the expansion of deportations and called the measure “irresponsible.” The council stated its opposition to the principle of deporting individuals to Afghanistan and described the lifting of previous restrictions as worrying.
Clara Bunger, a politician from Germany’s Left Party, said that deportations to Afghanistan are gradually becoming a routine process and, in her view, this action conflicts with human rights regulations designed to protect individuals.
Previously, deportations of Afghan citizens were mainly limited to those who had committed crimes or were deemed security threats. After the Taliban returned to power in 2021, deportations to Afghanistan were practically halted. The recent renewed expansion of deportations has sparked extensive political and human rights debates in Germany.
