US Doubts Outcome of Talks with Iran but Remains Ready for Dialogue, Says Rubio
Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, stated that Washington doubts the effectiveness of negotiations with Iran, although, according to him, the United States is prepared for dialogue.
Rubio claimed that Iranian officials have reached out to American counterparts regarding talks on the ongoing tensions, but he believes Tehran is not ready to reach an agreement. He also alleged that Iran has not adhered to its commitments in the past.
Referring to Iran’s economic situation, the US Secretary of State said the country is facing severe inflation and extensive pressures, adding that Washington seeks a swift diplomatic agreement. However, he warned that if Iran does not cooperate, the US has “options” available.
In another part of his remarks, Rubio accused Iran of threatening shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and said the US is working to limit Tehran’s ability to target vessels. He emphasized that Washington does not accept any country’s dominance over strategic maritime passages.
The US Secretary of State also claimed that the United States has damaged Iran’s military infrastructure and reiterated that Washington will not accept Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
He further referred to US talks with China and developments in the Ukraine war, stating that Washington values continuing dialogue with Beijing despite differences and will consult with Sergey Lavrov about the war in Ukraine.
Tensions between Tehran and Washington continue amid diplomatic efforts to revive previous nuclear agreements, which in recent years have experienced multiple ups and downs.
