Trump Backs FIFA President Infantino for UN Secretary-General Role
The New York Post has reported that Donald Trump, the President of the United States, intends to support Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
According to the report, Infantino’s close ties with Trump reportedly strengthened during this year’s World Cup. The 56-year-old Infantino awarded Trump the first FIFA Peace Award last December; a move some observers interpreted as a sign of his closeness to the US President.
The New York Post cited a source close to Trump as saying that the US President believes Infantino commands global respect and has a unique ability to bring countries together.
This comes as Antonio Guterres, the current UN Secretary-General, is expected to complete his term at the end of December. The new Secretary-General requires the support of at least 15 members of the Security Council, followed by approval from the UN General Assembly.
Alongside Infantino, Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, and Rafael Grossi, current Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, have also been mentioned as potential candidates for the position. Some reports indicate that Bachelet’s candidacy might face opposition from the United States.
