Trump Confirms Ongoing Backchannel Talks with Iran Amid Rising Tensions

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated that behind-the-scenes talks with Iran are currently underway. These remarks come amid recent tensions and increasing domestic pressure on his administration.

Trump made these comments on Tuesday during a meeting with Joseph Aoun, the President of Lebanon, at the White House. He claimed that the Iranians are eager to meet with American officials, but Washington is not interested in such a meeting.

The U.S. president also said that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz would not affect the upcoming midterm elections. This is notable as recent tensions with Iran have led to concerns about rising energy prices and their economic impact within the United States.

In another part of his remarks, Trump referred to relations between Washington and Beirut, asserting that he has had constructive meetings with the Lebanese president and that the United States will resolve many issues related to Lebanon. Without mentioning the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, he described the relationship between the two countries as “good.”
