India Calls for Review of UN Sanctions on Afghanistan Amid Political Changes
India’s permanent representative to the United Nations has called for a serious review of the current UN sanctions regime on Afghanistan, stating that it no longer serves its purpose given the extensive political changes in the country.
At a recent UN Security Council meeting, Praveathani Harish emphasized that Afghanistan’s political conditions have changed significantly compared to the past, and continuing punitive approaches will not help resolve the ongoing crises. He urged the international community to adopt a new, realistic policy towards Afghanistan.
The Indian envoy also condemned Pakistan’s airstrikes inside Afghan territory, citing findings from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) that these attacks have caused significant civilian casualties.
In another part of his remarks, Harish accused Pakistan of imposing trade and transit restrictions on Afghanistan and called for these limitations to be lifted. According to him, removing these barriers could pave the way for expanded trade and improve Afghanistan’s economic situation.
