Iran Embassy Rejects NATO Ankara Summit Statement as Politically Motivated and Baseless

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Turkey has strongly rejected the accusations made in the final statement of the NATO heads of state summit in Ankara regarding Iran’s nuclear program and the issue of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, calling them “baseless and politically motivated.”
In a statement released following the publication of NATO’s declaration, the embassy asserted that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful in nature, and emphasized that Tehran, as a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), has consistently maintained that nuclear weapons have no place in its defense doctrine.
The Iranian embassy also described the country’s role in ensuring the security of maritime navigation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz as “responsible,” stating that regional instability arises from “illegal military interventions and provocative actions by extra-regional actors,” not Iran’s policies.
The statement further said that the United States and Israel, not Iran, have targeted the negotiation process for attack and preferred a confrontational approach over diplomacy. The Iranian embassy asserted that NATO, given its “support for aggressive actions against the Iranian people,” lacks the legitimacy to preach to Tehran or prescribe solutions for peace and security in the region.
In conclusion, the diplomatic mission reaffirmed that while defending its sovereignty and national security, the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to diplomacy and the principles of the United Nations Charter and views sustainable peace in the region as dependent on mutual respect for countries’ sovereignty and refraining from foreign interference.
