Poland Detains 15 Afghan Nationals at Lithuanian Border Amid Migrant Crackdown

Poland’s border guard announced the detention of 54 undocumented migrants attempting to cross illegally from Lithuania into Polish territory. Among those detained were 15 Afghan nationals, who were being transported in a truck container.

In a statement released on Friday, July 3, Poland’s border guard confirmed that alongside the Afghan citizens, 30 Pakistani and 9 Bangladeshi nationals were also apprehended in the incident.

According to the agency, all detained individuals, lacking legal residency documents, will be returned to Lithuania. Both Poland and Lithuania are members of the European Union and have faced increasing attempts of illegal border crossings in recent years.

In recent years, many Afghans, driven by widespread poverty, unemployment, and growing restrictions under Taliban rule, have chosen perilous smuggling routes to reach Europe. Migration experts warn that as long as employment, education, and social security conditions inside Afghanistan do not improve, illegal migration flows are likely to continue.
