Herat Governor Travels to Kabul Amid Protests and Women’s Detentions

Following recent protests in Herat and the detention of dozens of women accused of not adhering to the Taliban administration’s prescribed hijab, Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the governor appointed by the Taliban in Herat, has traveled to Kabul. Sources indicate that the purpose of his visit is to discuss the recent events in the province with senior Taliban officials.

However, the governor’s spokesperson officially stated that the trip is intended to follow up on infrastructure projects and develop trade relations. This visit coincides with increasing criticism over the Taliban forces’ treatment of women in Herat.

Last week, Taliban forces detained dozens of women in Herat city, an action that sparked widespread public backlash and street protests. The arrests, based on accusations of not observing the Taliban’s dress code for women, have once again drawn attention to the severe restrictions on women’s rights and freedoms.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed that a child died during these protests. Despite this, the Taliban administration has not provided a clear explanation regarding how the child was killed or the responsibility of its forces. This lack of transparency has raised concerns about the handling of the protests and the accountability of the responsible authorities.
