EU Parliament Member Warns Against Inviting Taliban to Brussels Meeting

Hanna Neumann, a member of the European Parliament, has stated that inviting the Taliban administration’s delegation to Brussels for a meeting on the deportation of Afghan migrants could undermine the credibility and trustworthiness of the European Union. She described this move as being at odds with the EU’s declared values.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Ms. Neumann emphasized that such an invitation would confer international legitimacy on the Taliban administration. According to her, the EU should not grant official status to a regime that systematically restricts women’s rights and freedoms by facilitating dialogue in Brussels.

She asserted: “The European Union should not invite the Taliban to Brussels for talks. By doing so, we legitimize a regime that systematically oppresses women on the international stage and lose our own credibility.”

This reaction comes after a European Commission spokesperson confirmed earlier during a press conference that an invitation had been sent to Taliban officials in Kabul to participate in a Brussels meeting addressing the issue of Afghan migrant deportations from EU member states.

So far, it remains unclear which specific body or official within the Taliban structure received the invitation, and the exact date of the meeting has not been announced.

Inviting representatives of the Taliban administration has sparked widespread responses among some members of the European Parliament and human rights activists. Critics believe that any formal engagement at such a level, without tangible changes in the restrictive policies against women and other segments of society, could lead to the normalization of the Taliban’s international status—an outcome they view as conflicting with human rights principles.
