Pakistan summons Indian envoy after naval collision in economic zone
Pakistan said on Wednesday it had summoned the Indian charge d’affaires in Islamabad and conveyed a strong protest to New Delhi after a collision between an Indian Navy vessel and a Pakistani Navy ship in the country’s exclusive economic zone.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry said the incident took place on September 15, 2026, while the Pakistan Navy was conducting its biennial Sea Spark-26 exercises. According to the ministry, the Indian vessel caused the collision by carrying out aggressive manoeuvres at close and dangerous range.
Islamabad described the incident as a serious violation of international law as well as the 1991 bilateral agreement between the two countries on advance notification of military exercises and troop movements. Pakistani officials also warned that the incident could increase tensions in South Asia.
The foreign ministry said the Indian charge d’affaires was asked to convey to New Delhi that Islamabad strongly rejected the action. Pakistan also urged India to comply with international law and bilateral agreements, particularly those related to the prevention of maritime incidents.
Pakistan further called on the international community to urge India to abandon what Islamabad called a hostile approach and irresponsible actions. An exclusive economic zone is a maritime area in which a country has special rights to exploit and manage resources.
