India Calls for Review of UN Sanctions on Afghanistan Amid Changing Political Realities

India’s representative to the United Nations has called for a reassessment of the current UN sanctions on Afghanistan, stating that the country’s political reality has changed over the past five years and that the sanctions should be reviewed in light of new circumstances.
Harish emphasized that the United Nations and the international community require policy tools designed to benefit the Afghan people and steer policies in the right direction, rather than relying solely on punitive measures. According to him, these punitive tools have gradually lost their effectiveness.
The Indian representative also condemned Pakistan’s airstrikes on Afghan territory, citing a report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) that highlighted extensive civilian casualties from these attacks.
These remarks come as discussions on sanctions and the international community’s approach to Afghanistan remain a key topic within the UN Security Council.
