UN Chief Guterres Warns Past 11 Years Were the Warmest on Record Amid Climate Crisis

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5th, announced that the past 11 years have been the warmest on record and stressed the urgent need for the world to take immediate action to curb the climate crisis. He warned that even a slight increase in the Earth’s temperature causes significant damage, with the most severe impacts falling on vulnerable individuals and communities.

Last night, Guterres posted a message on his X (formerly Twitter) account highlighting that warning signs of climate change are now visible worldwide, and environmental challenges have taken on more serious dimensions. According to him, continuing on this path could pose profound threats to future generations.

The UN chief emphasized that the time for action has arrived and the global community must pursue the responsibility of environmental protection with greater seriousness. He stated, “This is the moment to act for the environment and our future.”

World Environment Day is observed annually to raise public awareness about nature conservation and pollution reduction. According to United Nations statistics, about 430 million tons of plastic waste are produced globally each year, a significant portion of which is not properly recycled, thereby exacerbating the pollution crisis.
