UNICEF Warns Global Consequences of Rising Tensions with Iran

A senior official from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that the consequences of rising tensions and military actions related to Iran could extend beyond the region and impact the global humanitarian situation.

Jean Cedric Miousse, head of UNICEF’s logistics services, told Sputnik that disruptions in supply chains, especially along vital transportation routes, affect the lives of children in various countries. According to him, price increases are already noticeable, and ship movements in the Middle East, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, have faced disruptions; a situation that could quickly escalate into a humanitarian crisis.

He also added that some airlines have canceled flights to Africa, and operational costs are rising amid declining global financial support — a development that poses serious challenges to relief efforts.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), among 75 vulnerable economies worldwide, 65 countries rely on oil imports. Rising energy prices for these countries mean higher public costs and increased pressure on the livelihoods of nearly one billion people; a factor that could exacerbate economic and humanitarian divides in less developed nations.
