Italy Deploys 100 Troops and Fighter Jets to Romania for NATO Training Mission

Italian media have reported that Italy is sending around 100 troops and several fighter jets to Romania for a training mission as part of NATO cooperation. This move is said to be in response to concerns over potential threats related to Russia. According to the newspaper La Repubblica, the operation will commence on June 15 and last for one month. The training will take place at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Constanța, eastern Romania. The mission reportedly differs from NATO’s usual Air Policing program, focusing instead on training Romanian forces to counter and shoot down drones. Fighter jets will be present, with a portion of the exercises dedicated to drone interception. This decision follows an incident on May 29 in the city of Galați, Romania. Local media reported that a Russian drone, allegedly attacking targets in Ukraine near the Romanian border, entered Romanian airspace and collided with a ten-story residential building. Previously, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace announced that the UK had stationed fighter jets in Romania to support NATO air patrol missions. These military moves come as the ongoing war in Ukraine continues to cast a shadow over Eastern Europe’s security situation, prompting NATO member states to enhance their military presence in the region.
