Potential Naming of Iran-US Agreement as ‘Islamabad Declaration’ Amid Sensitive Talks

Regional media have reported that if Iran and the United States reach a preliminary agreement, the document will be released under the name “Islamabad Declaration.” Al Arabiya, citing anonymous senior sources, wrote that Pakistan, as the main mediator, has played a pivotal role in the process and will likely take responsibility for announcing the memorandum of understanding. According to the report, Islamabad hosted the negotiating delegations from Iran and the US in the early days following the announcement of a ceasefire in the ongoing war. It has also been claimed that Pakistan will manage the official declaration of any potential agreement even without the direct presence of the negotiating parties; a development that, if realized, would further highlight the country’s role in regional diplomatic equations. The sources cited by Al Arabiya also mentioned that the next round of negotiations may take place on June 5. However, so far, official officials from both sides have not released specific details regarding the exact time and location of the upcoming meeting. Meanwhile, reports have emerged about the possibility of the US returning to some previous approaches and violating one of the agreed clauses, a matter that could cast uncertainty over the negotiation atmosphere. Esmail Baghai, spokesperson for the Iranian negotiating team, referred to the current situation yesterday, stating that “an agreement with the US is both very far and very close,” adding that the Islamic Republic is prepared for all options—from continuing negotiations to halting them or continuing the war. Recent developments indicate that the talks remain at a sensitive and fragile stage, and the final outcome will depend on political decisions and the extent to which both parties adhere to potential commitments.
