UNICEF Launches Support Program for Midwives in 2,400 Health Centers Across Afghanistan
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank, the implementation of a large-scale support program for staff at 2,400 health centers across Afghanistan. This initiative covers a significant portion of frontline healthcare workers, including midwives.
According to UNICEF, the primary focus of this support is to strengthen maternal and child care services, which are crucial for family health and reducing risks during pregnancy and childbirth. Midwives serve as the first and sometimes the only healthcare providers for women in many areas, especially in remote regions.
UNICEF emphasized that the continuation of these supports is essential to ensure families across the country have access to primary healthcare services. In recent years, Afghanistan’s health system has faced serious financial and structural challenges, and ongoing international assistance has played a decisive role in preventing the collapse of essential services.
The organization added that investment in the health sector, particularly in maternal and child care, is not only a humanitarian necessity but also a development priority for the country’s future.
