Taliban’s Acting Foreign Minister Meets China’s Special Envoy in Kabul

The Taliban’s Foreign Ministry has announced that Mullah Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting head of the ministry, met with Yu Shaoyong, China’s special envoy for Afghanistan, in Kabul. According to the ministry, the main topics of discussion were strengthening bilateral relations, regional security, and the ongoing Urümqi talks.
The released statement noted that both sides emphasized building mutual trust, expanding economic cooperation, and taking practical steps to ensure sustainable stability in the region. No further details regarding possible agreements or specific outcomes of the meeting were disclosed.
The Urümqi talks, focused on Afghanistan, have been held in recent years with China playing a central role as a forum for diplomatic consultation. However, the Taliban administration has faced widespread criticism concerning the formation of an inclusive government, respecting the rights of citizens—especially women and girls—and securing both domestic and international legitimacy. It remains unclear to what extent these talks have contributed to improving the country’s political and economic situation.
China is among the few countries that have maintained active diplomatic and economic relations with the Taliban administration and stresses that Afghanistan’s security stability is a part of broader regional security.
