Pakistani Ambassador: Reopening of Strait of Hormuz Becomes Central Topic in Tehran Talks

The Pakistani ambassador to Russia has stated that, unlike before when Iran’s nuclear program was the main focus of discussions, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has now become the primary subject of talks concerning Tehran.

Faisal Naseer Tirmizi, in an interview with Russia’s TASS news agency, said that the issue of reopening this strategic maritime passage is now at the top of the negotiation agenda; a matter that, according to him, was not even raised at the start of these talks.

In response to a question about the existing disagreements and factors hindering the progress of negotiations, he emphasized, “The most important issue currently is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.” Tirmizi added that these negotiations are highly confidential and their details are not publicly available.

The Pakistani diplomat, highlighting the economic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, noted that 22 percent of the world’s oil, along with liquefied natural gas (LNG), chemical fertilizers, and raw materials for fertilizer production, pass through this route. He expressed hope that the current tensions related to this vital passage will ultimately be resolved through peaceful means.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy transit corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf to open waters. Any restrictions there could have wide-reaching economic consequences regionally and globally.
