Head of Kabul News Agency Arrested by Taliban Intelligence Forces

The Afghanistan Media Support Organization has reported that Ahmad Javid Nizami, head of the Perssut news agency, was arrested by the Taliban intelligence forces in Kabul on the evening of Thursday, May 7. The Taliban administration has not yet commented on the matter.
According to Nizami’s family members, he was detained at his office in Kabul city, and his relatives have so far had no information about his whereabouts or condition. This lack of information has heightened concerns about his health and legal status.
The Afghanistan Media Support Organization also stated that six journalists are currently being held in Taliban prisons. The organization warned that the continued detention of journalists has made the media environment increasingly insecure and has intensified worries about job security and freedom of expression in the country.
The group has called on the Taliban administration to release all detained journalists unconditionally. Despite these appeals, similar cases over recent years have shown that restrictions on the media and strict monitoring of journalists’ activities, especially by the Taliban intelligence directorate, continue unabated.
Since the Taliban returned to power, many domestic media outlets have faced pressure, censorship, and extensive restrictions—a situation that media freedom advocates consider a serious threat to citizens’ right to access information.
