French Presidential Candidate Mélenchon Labels Israel ‘Most Dangerous’ Regional Actor
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a French presidential candidate, has called Israel the ‘most dangerous’ actor in the region and the world, criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet for what he described as ‘warmongering’ and attacks on neighboring countries.
According to international media reports, Mélenchon stated in an interview with the French network LCI that his remarks were directed at the current Israeli leadership. He claimed that Israel seeks to escalate military tensions in the region and is committing ‘genocide.’
Mélenchon also referred to a conversation he said he had with a United Nations military official. He said he asked the official what the UN forces’ stance would be if Israel attacked Lebanon, to which he was told that ‘an order to withdraw has been issued.’
The French politician harshly criticized this approach, considering the withdrawal of peacekeeping forces contrary to their mission. In his view, the role of UN forces should be to separate the conflicting parties and prevent the spread of conflict, not to abandon zones of tension.
He further emphasized that France will not tolerate attacks on its soldiers and would respond in kind if its forces are targeted.
