UN Expert Calls for US Sanctions on ICC to Be Lifted

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has called for the immediate lifting of US government sanctions on the International Criminal Court, saying the pressure should not disrupt the review of Afghanistan’s case.

In a post on X on Saturday, 18 Mizan, Bennett said he agrees with Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in condemning the sanctions and urged Washington to lift all announced measures against the court without delay.

He also stressed that he supports the International Criminal Court’s investigation into the situation in Afghanistan and expressed confidence that the inquiry will continue and that US sanctions will not prevent its progress.

Earlier, Volker Turk also described the US government’s sanctions against the International Criminal Court as “unacceptable” and called for their removal.
