Fawzia Koofi Announces Release of Three Relatives Detained by Taliban

Fawzia Koofi, former member of Afghanistan’s House of Representatives, announced that three of her relatives, who had been detained by the Taliban administration, were released after about a week in custody. According to her, these individuals were arrested on the 8th of Sowr and finally released on Tuesday, the 15th of Sowr.

Koofi wrote on her X page that the detention of these individuals was solely due to their family relation to her, with no legal grounds provided for their imprisonment. She described this action as an example of pressure on the families of political activists.

The women’s rights activist expressed gratitude to a number of political, civil, and cultural activists, women’s movements, media, members of the diplomatic community, and also the United Nations special rapporteur, who, according to her, played a role in pursuing this matter.

Koofi emphasized that in the current circumstances, Afghan citizens, especially women, are facing extensive pressures and that there is a greater need for solidarity and joint advocacy than ever before. She added that the restriction of political activity areas for women and related detentions reflect the shrinking civil and political space under the Taliban administration — a matter that has repeatedly been a concern for human rights organizations.
