Taliban Administration Intensifies Measures Along Durand Line to Curb Smuggling

The Taliban administration’s Ministry of Defense has announced that in recent days, serious and sustained measures have been implemented to prevent smuggling along the Durand Line. According to the ministry, these actions aim to control illegal activities along this so-called border.

Based on a released statement, Taliban-affiliated defense forces have thwarted several smuggling attempts and prevented the continuation of illegal activities in some border areas. However, no details have been provided regarding the type of smuggled goods or the number of arrests made.

The Durand Line, which Afghanistan refers to as the “so-called line,” has always been a sensitive political and security issue between Afghanistan and Pakistan. In past years, reports have also emerged about increasing smuggling and illegal crossings along this line.

While the Taliban administration speaks of enhanced security measures, some experts stress that an effective fight against smuggling requires transparency, accurate statistics, and accountable oversight—factors for which sufficient information has not yet been made available to the media.
