Sewing Training Program Launched for Female Prisoners in Jowzjan

Officials in Jowzjan have announced the launch of a sewing training program for 18 female prisoners in the province’s prison; a program aimed at skill-building and creating work opportunities after their release.
Qari Seyyed Nasratullah Nasrat, head of technical and vocational education in Jowzjan, said at the opening ceremony that the sewing training will last six months, during which participants will acquire practical skills in the profession. He added that establishing such programs can empower female prisoners to become self-reliant and earn income through these skills after completing their sentences.
Meanwhile, Qari Mohammad Idris Qari Zada, head of the Jowzjan Agriculture Institute, stated that upon successful completion of the course, graduates will receive official and valid certificates. He further explained that women can use the acquired skills to start small or medium sewing workshops and initiate independent economic activities, which he said could improve their livelihood and contribute to the local economy.
Mulla Rozaldin Saadat, deputy of the Jowzjan prison, also noted that currently, courses in religious studies, literacy, sewing, carpentry, and beadwork are being taught in the prison. He said the sewing section for female prisoners was established based on a memorandum of understanding between the Jowzjan prison and the technical and vocational education directorate.
Officials say the main goal of these programs is the social and economic rehabilitation of prisoners and preparing them for reentry into society. However, this initiative comes as women outside the prison continue to face widespread restrictions on education and work imposed by the Taliban administration, significantly limiting their job and educational opportunities.
The Jowzjan Technical and Vocational Education Directorate has also added that soon, sewing, carpentry, and mobile phone repair workshops will be established for male prisoners in the province.
