Taliban Urges Media to Exercise Greater Caution in Expressing Views

Hamidullah Muhajir Farahi, Deputy of Publications at the Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture, stated that the administration will not compromise on “religious values”. He called on religious scholars, media activists, and writers to avoid what he described as “irresponsible statements and illogical criticisms.”

Farahi expressed his belief that such remarks cause doubt within the community and increase divisions. He emphasized that media outlets and intellectual figures should be more careful when expressing their views.

These remarks come amid years of extensive restrictions on media activities and freedom of expression in the country, with many journalists and cultural activists complaining about pressures and limitations. Press rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over the shrinking space for criticism and dialogue in the country.

Critics argue that the unilateral emphasis on preventing criticism could limit the space for free scientific and media discussions, whereas constructive criticism and open dialogue are considered vital elements of intellectual and social dynamism in any society.
