Second French Soldier Dies Following Attack on UNIFIL Peacekeepers in Lebanon

The President of France announced that the country’s second soldier wounded in an attack on United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers has died. Emmanuel Macron stated that Anis Girdan was severely injured on April 18 and passed away after being transferred to France due to the severity of his wounds.

Macron condemned the attack and emphasized the need to ensure the security of peacekeeping forces. UNIFIL troops, operating under the United Nations in southern Lebanon, are tasked with monitoring security conditions and helping maintain stability in the area.

The United Nations also issued a statement calling the attack on peacekeepers “unacceptable” and demanded an immediate investigation. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the organization, said those responsible must be identified, prosecuted, and held accountable. According to him, the UN Secretary-General welcomed the commitment of Lebanese authorities to follow up on the matter.
