US Navy Seizes Iranian-Linked Oil Tanker in Southern Indian Ocean

The United States Department of Defense has announced that its naval forces have seized the oil tanker “MT Tiffany” in the southern Indian Ocean. According to the department, the vessel was not flying any country’s flag and was targeted in accordance with sanctions.

The Pentagon explained in a statement that the operation took place within the area of responsibility of the US Indo-Pacific Command, and US forces gained control of the tanker after boarding it via helicopter. American officials justified the seizure under what they called the “right of visit and enforcement of maritime sanctions.”

The Department of Defense also claimed that the tanker was on the sanctions list and was materially supporting Iran. The department added that it will continue efforts to intercept ships it alleges are involved in illicit networks and does not consider international waters a “safe haven” for sanctioned vessels.

This event occurred as US President Donald Trump expressed willingness to negotiate with Iran, while simultaneously claiming that Iran has violated ceasefires multiple times.

So far, no further details have been released regarding the crew’s condition or an official response from Iran on the matter.
