Taliban Distributes Land to 1,200 Returning Families Across Four Provinces
The Taliban’s High Commission for Migrant Affairs has announced the distribution of residential land plots to 1,200 returning families in the provinces of Nangarhar, Farah, Faryab, and Nimroz. According to the commission, this brings the total number of plots allocated to returnees nationwide to 59,548.
The commission states that the land distribution process continues according to a structured program, aiming to provide permanent settlement opportunities for returning families and improve their living conditions. Taliban officials emphasize that this initiative is part of a broader plan to manage the large wave of migrant returns.
Hamdullah Fetrat, deputy spokesperson of the Taliban administration, announced on Monday that 58 special townships have been designated nationwide for returning migrants. He added that the land distribution is currently underway in 30 of these townships.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has reported that nearly six million Afghan migrants have returned to the country since 2023. The UN forecasts that an additional three million will return by the end of this calendar year.
In recent years, Iran and Pakistan have intensified the repatriation of Afghan migrants, with over two and a half million people having been returned to Afghanistan in the past year. This increase in returns has put severe pressure on the country’s economic infrastructure and services.
Despite Taliban claims regarding land distribution and the establishment of special townships, some returnees report that these programs have not been widely implemented. Some residents of these townships claim that they have, in some cases, been denied permission to build, leading to stalled construction.
Many returning families continue to complain about the lack of adequate shelter, unemployment, and shortages of essential services such as drinking water and electricity. These issues highlight the urgent need for greater transparency and concrete action from the Taliban administration to address the situation of these families promptly.
