Over 300 Migrant Families Return to Afghanistan in One Day, UN Highlights Challenges

Media outlets under Taliban administration have reported that in the past day, 308 migrant families have returned to Afghanistan through various border crossings. These returns took place at the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar, Spin Boldak in Kandahar, Islam Qala in Herat, and the Silk Bridge in Nimroz.

According to a report by Bakhtar News Agency, 261 families returned via Torkham in Nangarhar, 26 families through the Silk Bridge in Nimroz, 12 families from Islam Qala in Herat, and another 12 families from Spin Boldak in Kandahar. These figures were published on Monday, January 31.

The United Nations, expressing concern about the living conditions of returnees, stated that only 11 percent of these individuals have jobs, a matter that creates serious challenges in meeting basic needs and reintegrating them into society.

Two days earlier, reports of around 300 migrant families returning to Afghanistan had also been published. According to UN data, a total of 2.8 million Afghan migrants are expected to return from Iran and Pakistan to Afghanistan in 2025—a trend that requires clear planning, support, and accountability from the Taliban administration.
