First Train Carrying Diesel Enters Afghanistan’s Herat from Iran

For the first time, a train carrying diesel fuel has arrived in Herat Province from Iran. According to the spokesperson for the Taliban-run Ministry of Public Works, the 20-wagon train reached the Rozanak station on Sunday evening via the Khaf-Herat railway line.

The shipment included 1,120 tons of diesel fuel transported from Iran to Afghanistan. The arrival of this train marks an expansion in the use of the railway for transporting critical goods such as fuel in western Afghanistan.

The Khaf-Herat railway is a joint project between Iran and Afghanistan, aimed at improving transport infrastructure and increasing trade between the two nations. However, concerns have been raised about the lack of transparent management and clear policymaking under Taliban rule, which could hinder the effective use and development of this route.

Despite controlling key infrastructure resources, the Taliban administration has yet to present a clear and comprehensive plan for maximizing the country’s transport potential. Experts emphasize that the absence of accountable institutions and administrative instability within the Taliban regime poses a significant barrier to sustainable development in the transport sector.
