UNFPA Continues Life-Saving Health Services for Mothers and Children in Kandahar

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has announced that life-saving health services for mothers and children continue at the Kandahar Transit Center clinic, where trained midwives are present to assist with safe deliveries.

On Monday, 13th Dalwa, UNFPA posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) page that its health teams in Kandahar province are striving to ensure that pregnant women have access to safe and standard health services even under difficult conditions.

According to the statement, the clinic operates with support from the United Kingdom, and UNFPA emphasized that each safe delivery at this center can restore hope and dignity to families—an issue of vital importance given Afghanistan’s fragile healthcare system.

Afghanistan is among the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates, with many women dying annually due to lack of access to adequate healthcare services. This situation has worsened since the Taliban took power, imposing widespread restrictions on the healthcare system and women’s mobility.

Earlier, local sources reported that a pregnant mother died during childbirth in the Qadis district of Badghis province due to her inability to reach a healthcare center, highlighting the vast gap between health needs and available facilities in remote areas.

UNICEF has also warned that over one million pregnant and breastfeeding women in Afghanistan suffer from malnutrition and have limited access to essential health services, underscoring the urgent need for serious response and concrete action.
