Taliban’s Crackdown on Shia Institutions Viewed as Retribution Amid Regional Tensions

The closure of the Shia ‘Tamaddon’ TV channel and the blocking of the large Khatam al-Nabiyyin school represent more of a retaliatory move and settling of scores against the Shia community and the Islamic Republic of Iran than any justified legal or religious motive. The Taliban are well aware that Tamaddon and Khatam al-Nabiyyin enjoy support from Iran and religious authorities in Qom and Najaf.

The Taliban Emirate, understanding that the Islamic Republic is currently heavily engaged with the United States, Israel, Arab countries, and Europe, leaving little opportunity to attend to Afghan affairs, has decided to use this unique opportunity to assault Shia religious and cultural centers, hoping to dismantle Iran’s spheres of influence.

At present, the Pakistani government and military stand firmly against the Taliban and support their opponents. It is hoped that these suppressions and restrictions targeting Shia centers and the efforts to combat Iranian influence will make the Islamic Republic’s officials aware of Afghanistan’s realities and the true nature of the Taliban.

Whenever the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan—two key and influential neighbors of Afghanistan—align and coordinate in seeking a regime change of the Taliban and support their opposition, the Taliban regime will undoubtedly not endure.

These suppressions and closures are an evil that might ultimately lead to good for the people and country.
